Hey for opening up this discussion as I´m also really interested to know if it´s possible to create flat color animations/animated characters with Grease Pencil like one can make with Moho or After Effects! To my knowledge there aren´t any ways, though. Still, a proper mask, like the one I described, would be very useful for rigging cut-out characters in Grease Pencil, also, it would be even better if you could choose to include the stroke, or not, in the mask, like it is done in Moho! I have tried different modes to create a mask, none works for a rigged character, I tried your workaround, it does work, kinda, but I predict problems rigging this way, although I will try. Since this is really close to the behavior you would want from a mask, the devs might have an easy time tweaking this behavior and turning this into an actual mask blend mode (we would still need a proper subtract mode though). When you set a black stroke to subtract the colors of other layers it overlaps with should keep their colors, not become transparent. And just like Freestyle, they are fully compatible with EEVEE. The upcoming Grease Pencil objects are rendered as part of an overlay pass very similar to Freestyle. Lines can be Grease Pencil, an UVtexture on a Mesh plane or Curves.
